On Energy: Rhapsody
— 2019 - 2021
In 2020, my painting unfolded into a flame red line. I worked rapidly, experimentally, and joyfully. It began with red crayon cartooning in my sketchbook. As I moved the imagery into paint, I made a new material discovery: stretched paper canvases. Stretching my paper allowed me to toss around tinted waters and use wet sponges to reactivate dried gouache paint. I made paintings of energetic things: football players, magic carpets, boiling pots. My aim was to capture the energy of a quick sketch in the finished paintings. The flame red line played a large role, moving rapidly through each piece with energy.
